Custom Bikes and Re-Builds

BMW Motorcycles, especially the RnineT and R18, make great custom bikes. With quality substance as the base and numerous alternative accessories these bikes just beg your imagination to come up with new creations. My after-work stress therapy involves customising and restoring bikes. Watch this space for new projects and progress!

What's this all about?

Making Custom Bikes Accessible

This site is all about exhibiting what is possible with (mostly) BMW Motorcycles and easily accessible custom parts - where I find local supply to be lacking, I try change this. For the rest, my focus is on using local talent and what I can do with a few standard tools in my garage and a limited budget. Same goes for the restorations. Surprise yourself with what can be done!

While we work out the rear-end and paint design (see my previous posts), I thought I'd share a bit about the exhaust with you all - I...

Project Café Racer 2: The Frame

For this build (you’ll see why later) I wanted a black frame instead of the standard silver frame on the Racer. This called for some...

R18 Cruiser: The Start

This glorious heritage bike, harking back to the beautiful BMW R5, is powered by a thunderous 1802cc boxer twin. This is a high-quality...

Café Racer 1: Gulf Edition Summary

So this project is complete. I hope I achieved my goal of showing what's possible in a home garage, with just a few tools (the most...

Café Racer 1: Gulf Edition Details

Some details I really like about this build. The Bell Bullitt helmet in matching colours adds the final touch. And here's the sound of...

Café Racer 1: The Front

I removed the large fairing-mounted mirrors and replaced these with tidy Rizoma bar-end mirrors (also imported, but you can find them...

Café Racer 1: The Paintjob

Well, the name should give it away – I went for a nostalgic Gulf Racing look in the colour scheme and design. The racing number is of...

Café Racer 1: Option 719 Storm Grey

The Option 719 “bolt on accessories” provide an OEM-designed and manufactured opportunity to add a touch of individuality and...

For the exhaust I searched up a local custom exhaust guy – I came across Dominator Performance Parts and an approachable guy called...

The rear-end of the standard Racer has a lot of potential for improvement. The homologated back end, with the large plastic piece holding...

Cafe Racer 1: Stripped

I started by stripping away all the trim and sent it off to be resprayed. Then I stripped of all the parts at the rear, to be replaced by...

Cafe Racer 1: The Plan

Whilst the Racer already has many key ingredients of a Café Racer, like the dropped handlebars, short single seat, “floating rear” and a...
