Custom Bikes and Re-Builds

BMW Motorcycles, especially the RnineT and R18, make great custom bikes. With quality substance as the base and numerous alternative accessories these bikes just beg your imagination to come up with new creations. My after-work stress therapy involves customising and restoring bikes. Watch this space for new projects and progress!

What's this all about?

Making Custom Bikes Accessible

This site is all about exhibiting what is possible with (mostly) BMW Motorcycles and easily accessible custom parts - where I find local supply to be lacking, I try change this. For the rest, my focus is on using local talent and what I can do with a few standard tools in my garage and a limited budget. Same goes for the restorations. Surprise yourself with what can be done!

"K" for Custom

I have long been intrigued by the look of a stripped down K-Series custom build. I’m actually a “twin-guy” but that beautiful and unique...

BMW Heritage RnineT Racer

This is my third RnineT Racer. With the last two, I was inspired by racing themes of bygone eras, with the Gulf and JPS inspired livery....

Back to the Roots

For this Custom Build I went back to my original R18. I wanted the more classic stretched out cruiser look, with the possibility of...

Same-Same but Different

Building Maverick (see the previous posts) was so much fun and I liked some of the other work I saw at Stoos Customs (based in Cape...

A Beautiful Rear End

I was not happy with the rear mudguard of Maverick, as it did not hug the wheel nicely. And being made of fibreglass the curve was not...

Maverick: Details

As described in my previous post, the paint design was intended to reflect aircraft of an earlier era. This meant that it had to be done...

Maverick: Complete

After a lot of painstaking detail work, Maverick is complete! The electrics, again, proved a challenge as the aftermarket indicators...

R18 Bobber: MAVERICK

The visual theme that I chose for this build is maybe confusing, as the bike is German and my inspiration comes from Hollywood, also I...

R18 Bobber: A sound to match

For the exhaust I wanted to keep the technical specifications intact, in other words not mess with the Cat and various exhaust sensors. I...

R18 Bobber, with a difference

I already mentioned that this project will focus on the “Bobber” style of customisation - this is true to the heritage of the R18, with...

R18 Big Boxer: Back to the Roots

I already have a lightly modified R18, which I have shown in my other Posts (Cruiser). However, inspired by some really creative custom...

The 70s Twins

Here you see one last photo of the 70s Cafe Racer Twins - just before separation. The Gulf has been sold, which leaves me with the JPS...

Project Café Racer 2: Complete

So, its done and I'm thrilled with the look. The paintjob pays tribute to the awesome racing era when JPS F1 cars were some of the most...

R18 Cruiser: Rear-end

In the interim I decided to make some small changes to the rear of my R18. This included removing the large number plate holder and...

G450X: Restoration 3 - Back to Original

With this job we decided to stick to a full off-road restoration, but back to the original look. All parts needing renewal were replaced....

G450X: Restoration 2 - Rallye Edition

This is the bike I will be keeping. I like the unique "Rallye look" and having installed new parts on all wear parts, it feels and looks...

G450X: Restoration 1 - Original

So the bikes are eventually complete. I'll start with the one I wanted restored to full original condition - this took a huge amount of...

Project Café Racer 2: Custom Exhaust

For the exhaust I decided to try another local custom exhaust manufacturer, this time Stealth Performance Parts in Centurion, run by...

Project Café Racer 2: Progress

I thought I'd share some progress with you, as the build is looking really good. The frame has been painted black and put back together....

GS450X: Restoration Progress

The G450X Restoration project is coming along great. Here you see all three in various stages of completion. The first has been...
